I think being anti-Israel in specific ways (as opposed to simply declining to pass AIPAC's litmus test) is quickly becoming a left litmus test in Democratic politics.
Should Democrats ignore some of their values and prioritize “expand(ing) their electoral appeal to voters who support Trump, but do not share his obsession with the 2020 election?” Or, should they prioritize engaging disaffected and non-voters who share progressive values to create durable majorities?
There is a more fundamental element of this issue, which the author mentions in passing—critical thinking. It lies at the heat of all good public policy, and transcends any litmus test. In the case of the 2020 election, it's about truth. For fracking (apparently the author's favorite environmental hangup), it's about science. For trans rights, it's about fairness. For Israel, it's about manipulation. All the Dems have to do to nullify the right's ability to exploit a particular litmus test is to simply apply critical thinking to the issue and jettison any that are more religiosity than rationalism.
Election disputes have been a dime a dozen in our national history, and cheating has been rampant. The 2020 election accusations are just one man’s opinion. So why get all deranged and irrational about it? Purple rhetoric and shouting the opposition down just makes people wonder what you’re hiding. It’s an own goal.
