Brilliant framing on the timesheet idea. Voters seeing both sides as equally corrupt makes perfect sense when one party's hiding financial conflicts while the other gaslights people about obvious cognitive decline. I remeber working at a nonprofit where we had to log every hour for donors, and the transparency actually made everyone more accountable. The polling data showing performance accountability mattering more than stock trading bans is kinda wild but tracks with voter frustration.
A Little late to this piece but I have to say it is a perfect description of just how it feels to watch the dem party once again follow the instincts of elitist white men and women who are so far removed from anything resembling reality it is quite sickening. I always wondered if any men recognized what a bunch of cracker losers have had control of presidential candidates. I mean, Jon Edwards and Gary Hart, poor man. And if only Elizabeth had been embraced by the country…. Looking to read more of what you have planned for the immediate future.
True, voters resented the fact that Biden, who was clearly in decline, tried to get elected for a second term, and was wrongly enabled by those close to him. They also resented that when Biden finally dropped out of the race, there was no time to hold a real primary and Harris was the only choice. But neither of these actions was illegal or involved any quid pro quo corruption (at least that has surfaced), and to somehow try to equate the two behaviors is lazy and the opposite of critical thinking. There are a number of examples of corrupt Democrats, but Trump is in another universe of corruption. So how could any thinking person come to the conclusion that there is anything close to parity on this issue? I maintain that has occurred because of something not discussed in this article—that Republicans have long been masters of establishing "false equivalence." Every time a Republican is accused of corruption or any negative behavior, they simply point to something a Democrat has done. Often the Democrat's action pales in comparison, but the Republicans nevertheless draw a false equivalence, knowing that voters won't take the time to fully parse the issues. If Democrats really want to address corruption, asking for time sheets and town hall meetings is not going to do it. No, Democrats must think more fundamentally and pursue the real root cause of corruption in politics—which is of course, money. Getting money out of politics would be the single best thing Democrats could do to not only address corruption but improve democracy. Proposing real anti-corruption legislation is what Democrats should be proposing during the mid-terms. And the centerpiece should be a promise to America that they will stack the SC and repeal Citizens United v. FEC.
I always believed Biden’s choice of Kamala was based on his white man instincts that her candidacy wouldn’t fly and then when things changed they kept him on life support to tip the scales in trump’s favor. That’s why most intelligent people are appalled at the grotesque abuse of power from both parties. There is another way…
